You're here! I'm here! How strange and wonderful.

Postby Silk » Fri Jun 22, 2018 8:14 am

I was musing about "the old internet" which naturally meant pondering the old hangout and the old friends, and somehow here I am.

I know, I do this every few years. Every time I pop in, show wonder at the lingering of names I recognize while being certain no one remembers me, and then... forget again.

I don't know what I'm really doing here except saying hello and maybe trying to get a bit of that old feeling back.

I'll have to just keep this tab open for a while and see if anyone says hello.

(And then I ponder how amazed I would have been that lifetime ago, when the tavern was my haunt and getting online meant arguing with parents over possession of the computer and phone line. I have a computer more powerful than the one I used back then that casually sits in my pocket, is constantly online, and I barely bother to wonder at how amazing that is.)

Hi Silk :) welcome back again!

I think that's why we keep the Tavern going... so we've all got somewhere to go when we get that feeling. This is the place to indulge in nostalgia... and yes, I remember you :)

How big was the old tavern? What were the topics? I have a feeling I would have liked it but didn't think to search until the time had passed.

It kinda depends on which version you mean, the Tavern burned down a few times :P

The original one I joined, back in 2001, was huge. There was everything you see here, plus individual rooms for Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey (I think), and I believe a few others, but I didn't spend much time in those rooms, so I don't remember much. Perey just said there was a Robert Jordan one... there were a lot more rooms dedicated to individual authors :P There were at least three rooms for roleplay based on books... one for the Bel/Mal, and I forget the others. There was a couple of general chat rooms, one you could post in without membership... there was a noticeboard 'room' for well, notices :P And there were a couple of hundred members, if I recall correctly.

After that one burned down, we downsized a little, left Eddings with his own room, and combined all the other authors into one, and moved all roleplaying to the BR as well.

I don't remember much else. Other oldies, what am I missing?
